Vodacom has recently achieved the ISO 50001 certification for energy management across its markets.
This certification recognizes organizations that demonstrate world-class, efficient energy management practices, helping them reduce energy consumption through the implementation of an Energy Management System.
To qualify and retain the ISO 50001 certification, organizations must drive energy management practices from the top down. This includes setting targets for energy performance at a senior management level, implementing policies designed to achieve measurable goals, and driving continuous improvement in efficiency across operations.
Dejan Kastelic, Group Technology Officer for Vodacom Group, expressed pride in this achievement, highlighting the company’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% and sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2025.
The ISO 50001 certification reinforces Vodacom’s dedication to sustainable energy management and its journey towards net zero emissions.
Vodacom invests in energy efficiency programs, including sourcing more efficient network equipment, reducing energy demand by installing lower-power and cooling technologies, and decommissioning and upgrading legacy equipment. These investments led to a 26% reduction in Vodacom’s energy intensity from its
2023 to 2024 financial years.
Kastelic emphasized the importance of energy efficiency initiatives in helping Vodacom decarbonize society, recognizing the impact of climate change on its customers in Africa. He highlighted the need for sustained and improved action to bring about meaningful change, with energy efficiency being a critical approach for companies to resolve the problem of climate change.
